861,737. Treating potatoes &c. WEDDERSPOON PROCESSES Ltd. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 5, 1956], No. 27224/56. Class 49. [Also in Group XXX] Timed movement of potatoes or other tubers through an elongated trough containing liquid, e.g. an aqueous preparation of an organic mercury compound, is effected by paddle members which are moved from one end of the trough to the other in spaced sequence, the tubers being delivered into the trough from a conveyer at a rate so co-ordinated with the rate of movement of the paddle members through the trough as to deliver the same quantity of tubers into each compartment between adjacent paddle members in the trough. With the apparatus of Figs. 2 and 3, paddles 3 at equallyspaced intervals on endless chains 4 traverse a liquid-filled trough 1, and the tubers are delivered on the upper run 6 of a conveyer C, which is transverse to the trough, and are diverted from this conveyer by arms 8 and 8<SP>1</SP> to fall into the trough compartments formed by the paddles 3. The paddles extend across the width of the trough and are provided with slits 14 for passage of liquid during movement of the paddles through the trough. A flexible apron 10 having its fixed edge near the edge of the upper run 6 of the conveyer C is engaged at its free edge by each successive paddle 3, so that tubers falling from the conveyer as a paddle is passing thereunder will fall on to the apron, and, after passage of the paddle and release of the apron, will fall into the liquid in the trough. The tubers leave the liquid by an incline a the end of the trough. Specification 861,738 is referred to.
