Abstract

669,337. Carburetting. WERKSPOOR N. V. Feb. 16, 1949 [Feb. 17, 1948]. No. 4222/49. Class 7(iii) [Also in Group XXVIII] An internal combustion engine of the injection type comprises a fuel pump 31 having a cylinder with a plunger 30 therein to inject fuel into the combustion chamber of the engine and driving means for the plunger including a cylinder 21 with a piston 22 therein, a pneumatic link, such as a piston and cylinder unit 19, 20; for actuating the piston 22 and a lever system, such as 23-28, for transmitting movement from the piston to the plunger respectively. The piston 22 is retracted by a spring 32 which acts on a crosshead 29. Ascent of the piston 22 is controlled by a valve 40 which is positioned between the cylinders 20, 21 to permit the latter to communicate with the atmosphere through a port 41. The valve 40 is connected to the lever 25 by a rod 48 and a lever 46 which is adjustably pivoted at 47 to control the movement of the piston 22. Hence as the piston 22 approaches the uppermost position the valve is moved down to close the port 41 and open an overflow 44 thus stopping the piston. A further lever system 52-54, Fig. 2, (not shown), is connected to the lever 25 and co-operates with a collar on the rod 13 just before the piston 9 reaches the upper position so as to impart to the first lever system an initial movement in the direction of the pump.
