Abstract
667,673. Plywood handles. DENSIFIED WOODS PTY., Ltd., and STEANES, W. C. Nov. 14, 1949 [Dec. 23, 1948], No. 33130/48. Class 61 (i) and 145 (ii). Handles for axes and other implements are cut from a billet or board formed of precompressed layers of plies 5 of wood bonded by a synthetio resin under a pressure of 900 to 2,240 lb. p.s.i. and at a temperature, of 270‹ F. to 310‹ F. The layers are all arranged with their grain running in the same direction and the handles 6 are cut from the billet with the grain extending lengthwise of the handle and the joints of the layers parallel to the normal direction of the blow of the axe when in use. Preferably, timber of the eucalyptus species is used for the layers; inner layers may be of eucalyptus, with outer layers of birch or the like to provide a smooth wearing surface.
