A lathe or the like for successively acting upon the end of bar stock comprises a pair of lever rests 30, 32 for forming and parting tools, a pair of aligned slides 56, 58 connected to the rests so as to be capable of varying the arc of movement of the rests with respect to a constant movement of the slides, and a disc-cam 50 adapted to reciprocate the slides independently and connected adjustably thereto so as to adjust the rests about their pivots 34, 36. The latter comprise the eccentric throws of a cranked spindle 38 which is secured adjustably to a frame 2. The position of the tools 44, 46 in relation to the work, which is fed intermittently through a hollow spindle 18, may be adjusted by means of the spindle 38. A cam-shaft 12 carrying the disc-cam 50 which has grooves 52, 54 therein, is connected through gearing to the spindle 18, and this spindle, or the shaft 12, is adapted to be driven, for example, by a motor connected to a pulley on the spindle 18. Cam followers 74 provided on blocks 70, which are secured adjustably by means of screws 80 in slots 72 formed in the slides, are adapted to engage the cam grooves 52, 54 in order to reciprocate the slides and, when necessary, adjust the rests about the pivots 34, 36, pins 66 being provided to guide the slides. The slides are connected to the lever rests 30, 32 by links 86 pivoted at 88 to the slides and secured adjustably by screws 106 and lock-nuts 100 in position in arcuate recesses 95 in the rests. When the arc of movement of the lever rests is being adjusted by the screws 106, the ends of the links 86 secured to the levers pivot in slots 92 in the slides.
