684,652. Machine-tool details. PONGRACZ, F. March 8, 1951 [March 11, 1950], No. 5609/51. Class 83 (iii). A feed device for the tools of automatic lathes and like machines comprises a rotating control cam on a main cam-shaft and a transmission mechanism co-operating with the cam and feeding the tool against the pressure of a return spring, the tool-feeding stroke being controlled by an auxiliary oscillatable cam. The main cain-shaft 1 of the machine carries a cam 2 which operates through linkage 3, 4, to oscillate an auxiliary cam 5 on a stub shaft 7. The cam 5 transmits motion through a double lever 11, 14, and adjustable pins 10, 15, to a spring-returned tool-slide 17. The cam 2 controls the time when the tool is to be brought into operation whilst the cam 5 controls the amount of feed movement given to the tool slide. The latter cam has a portion of rising profile 5a followed by a concentric portion 5b and further movement of the cam after the pin 10 has reached this position does not affect the tool. Further movements of the linkage 3, 4, due for example to undesirable movements of the cam 2 caused by whip in the cam-shaft 1 are not, therefore, transmitted to the tool-slide. A number of auxiliary cams 5 may be mounted on the same shaft with their profiles staggered and brought into operation on a common lever 11, 14, to cut various diameters on the work. The cam 2 in this case has a profile shaped to oscillate the shaft of the cams 5 in a number of steps.
