Abstract

667,082. Making spikes. SOMMER, I., and ALMAAS, O. Jan. 25, 1950, No. 1918/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Forging; shearing.-A method of forging metal dog-spikes comprises performing, all in one machine, the steps of cutting off the heated metal to the required length, pointing the spike and upsetting and shaping the head. A machine for carrying out the invention comprises a housing 13 containing a punch 19 and die-pieces 3 and 5 carried by pivoted jaws 4 and 8, respectively, having rollers 9 and 11 engaging the upper and lower parts of the housing. The upper die-piece 5 is connected to the jaw 8 by screws 6 and springs 7. Both jaws are pivoted at 17 and are moved towards the punch 19 by a piston 18. The lower jaw 4 which has a cutting-blade 2 is raised by a wedge 10 as the jaws move towards the punch 19. The head of the spike is forged by means of an upsetting-die C (Fig. 4). In operation a heated iron bar 1 is fed through slot A (Fig. 4) in between the jaws 4 and 8 until it abuts against the stop 14. The piston 18 moves the jaws towards the punch 19 and as the lower jaw is raised by the wedge 10 the bar is cut to length by the cutter 2. Further movement of the jaws forces the bar against the punch 19 which is the shape of the spike point and the closed die pieces 3 and 5 which have cutting edges correspondingly shaped to cut a point on the bar I. In the heading operation the piston 18 remains stationary and the stamp C is thrust through the opening B (Fig. 4), the bar being held firmly by the punch 19, the V-shaped portion of the die-pieces 3 and 5 and the cutter 2 which is backed up by a beam 21. After the heading operation the pusher 18 is withdrawn and as the lower jaw descends the dog spike (Fig. 6) falls out of the die block.
