A method of making wire nails comprises advancing a nail length of wire stock, engaging and loosely holding the advanced nail length, cutting and pointing the nail length whilst holding it loosely, gripping the nail length adjacent the advanced front end thereof, heading the front end of the nail length, and releasing and ejecting the completed nail. A die set for carrying out the method has a pair of horizontal laterally acting centring slides 24, Fig. 5, which position the wire 54 whilst it is cut off into a nail length 56 and pointed by a pair of laterally acting dies 27, then a pair of slides 26 carrying jaws 67 grip the wire whilst a longitudinally-acting header 30 forms the head 57 thereon. The wire is fed through a guide bore 20 in the bottom member 16, Fig. 3, of the die set which supports the tools and is mounted on the bolster of a power press. The centring slides 24, Fig. 2, have inclined surfaces 42 which are engaged by adjustable cam surfaces 41 secured to the top member 15, mounted on the press ram, to move the slides inwardly; they are retracted by blade springs 40. The dies 27, carried by slides 22, Fig. 5, and the slides 26 are actuated by the top member through toggle linkages 34, Fig. 2. The slides 22 are preferably of square section and are reversible to position the dies 27 remote from the guide bore 20 whereby shorter nails may be produced. In another embodiment the slides 22 have recesses in both sides thereof and also a central slot to provide three alternative positions for the dies. The jaws 67 are adjustable on the slides 26 by shims and screws to allow for different sizes of wire. The header 30 is screwed into a slide 32 to allow for its adjustment and is actuated by the top member through bell-crank levers 47 and links 51, Fig. 3. During the upstroke of the press a spring-loaded ejector 58, pivoted at 59, is actuated by a spring-loaded hook 61 on the top member to discharge the finished nail through a slot 66.
