Abstract
368,287. Forging rock drills. KAPPEL, M., Beverly Place, Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A. Dec. 2, 1930, No. 36334. [Class 83 (iv).] Dies.-Apparatus for forging fluted articles such as star drills comprises a die holder 4 and work holder 5 each in two halves divided along line 2-2, Fig. 3. Each half 4a of the die holder has a tongue 20 guided in an opening 21 in the ring 2 mounted on the base 1 and has flat edges 23 engaging guide blocks 22. The die members 6 slide in grooves 8 in the holder 4 and their blade portions 9 slide in grooves 10 in the work holder 5. The dies are operated by wedges 25, 25a adjustably connected by screw devices to a plate 45 secured to the movable head of a press. Wedges 25, 25a carry threaded shanks 35 passing through holes in the base of internally threaded cup-shaped members 38 secured to the wedges by nuts 40. The cup members 38 are locked by nuts 44 in adjustable position on screw studs 43 rigidly secured to the plate 45. The two wedges 25 have central wedge surfaces 27 engaging the rear edges of the die members 6 and other wedge surfaces 29 on either side of the surfaces 27 which coact with rounded corners 30 on the parts 4a of the die holder so that the first action of the wedges is to close the die holder parts 4a and with them the work holder parts 5a, thereby gripping the work before the die members come into operation.
