Abstract

[Class 140] [Also in Groups V and XXIII] A stack of laminae provided with a binder is arranged between two pairs of interacting press tools, and pressure is exerted on the stack by the tools in two directions, viz., by a pair of main press tools in a direction perpendicular to the planes of the laminae, and by a pair of auxiliary press tools in a direction parallel to the planes of the laminae, the pressure of the auxiliary press tools being derived from the pressure of the main press tools through the mechanical interaction of the two pairs of tools. Fig. 1, shows a pair of main tools 1, 2 and a pair of auxiliary tools 3, 4, the main tools having wedge-like parts 3<1>, 4<1> which co-operate with sloping surfaces on the tools 3, 4. As the upper main tool descends, the tools 3, 4 are urged inwardly to press the edges of the stack of laminae. The height of the stack may be so chosen that first the laminae are pressed vertically by the main tools and then they are pressed both vertically and horizontally by all the tools. Fig. 3 shows similar tools with the addition of pins and wedges 10, 11, for clamping all the tools in the closed position. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the auxiliary tools 3, 4 are forced inwardly, as the main tool 2 descends, by rollers 16 carried by knuckle levers 12, 13 pivoted to the main tools. The pressing faces of the tools may be tapered to produce a conical article and means may be provided for preventing slipping of the article during pressing. A hollow metal insert which projects from the article may serve for transmission of heat during manufacture and as a fastening means, e.g., for an airscrew blade. According to the Provisional Specification, the tools may be operated by rams.
