582,478. Shaping wood by pressure ; bending wood. LYON, M. J., AGET, E., LOUCHARD, M., and GUILLOTEL, G. Feb. 1, 1946, No. 3217. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] In the manufacture of angle-shaped members from thin sheets of plywood, or the like, the sheets are placed together so that the grain in each of them obliquely intersects the line of subsequent folding or bending, and the parts are joined by glue applied between overlapping marginal bevelled portions in each layer, the layers being arranged so that the grain in one layer intersects the grain in the next layer. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a straight angle member is formed from overlapping diamond-shaped layers cut as indicated in Fig. 1 with bevelled ends, and bending along the line 4-4 is effected by clamping the layers between jaws 5, bending at right angles by a sliding block T, and allowing the glue to set while under pressure of a further clamp 6. An annulus of U-section can be produced from blanks shaped as shown in Fig. 7, which are squeezed vertically between a pair of curved surfaces designed to shape the bottom of the U and then the flanges are shaped by a pair of slide blocks. A flanged ring as in Fig. 8 is formed by shaping in a die elements shaped as in Fig. 9. The shaping of the articles may be effected by a former and an air-pressed membrane by apparatus as described in Specification 579,048.
