[Class 21] [Also in Group XXIII] A barrel stave is formed from a preformed blank having greater longitudinal curvature than that of the barrel, the blank being bent to the curvature of the barrel while its side edges are trimmed to a prescribed width at converging angles lying in planes radiating substantially from the axial centre of the barrel. The stave 18 is clamped on formers 13, at one end by an adjustable block 20 and at the other by a spring-loaded block 26 brought into position by a handle 23 through linkage 24, 25. The formers 13 and brackets 19, 22 supporting the clamps are mounted on a channel-iron carrier 10 which is drawn by a conveyer chain 32 along a table 30. Trimming cutters 31 are mounted on either side of the table, each cutter being driven by an electric motor'41. The angle of the cutters is varied by pivoting their supporting carriages 42 about axes 43. The carrier 10 is accurately aligned on the table 30 by series of rollers 36, 37, the rollers 37 being spring loaded.
