A planing and moulding machine has a first cutter 44, Fig. 5 (not shown), which trues the bottom of the workplace and also part of an adjacent side face so that two datum faces are provided, the side face co-operating with a shallow fence 41. The cutter 44, Fig. 1 (not shown), has an elongated body portion 10 with blades 12 for planing one face of the work and is fitted at one end with a disc 16 having blades 18 for trimming the side face. The body portion may be round, as shown, with slots 11 for the blades 12 and clamping blocks 13 or may be square with key-ways for headed clamping bolts. Additional blades cutting at the same diameter as the side blades 18 may be fitted at the other ends of the slots 11 so that a third face of the workpiece is trimmed and the distance apart of the two sets of side blades is adjustable. In addition to the first cutter 44, the machine has a top cutter 45 and a pair of vertical cutters 46, 47, Fig. 6 (not shown), and a fifth cutter may be fitted in a top or bottom position 48a or 48. The cutters may be driven by individual motors or in pairs, as by a motor 49 and a belt 50 passing round a jockey pulley 53. Rackoperated eccentric quills provide for some heightwise and fore-and-aft adjustment of the cutters. Feed rollers 40 drive the workpiece over table rollers 37 and spring-loaded side rollers press it against the fence 41. If the cutter 44 trims two side faces of the workpiece, these faces may be channelled between two fences 41 and the side rollers may be dispensed with.
