Abstract

743,632. Woodworking. DRUMMOND, E. P. Dec. 2, 1954 [Dec. 10, 1953], No. 34425/53. Class 145. A jig for trimming the straight edges of vat or tub staves to the required bevel and taper in a surface planing machine has a concave top surface 10<SP>1</SP>, 11' tapered in the longitudinal direction, inclined side edges 10<SP>2</SP>, IF and means,' such as the projecting pointed ends of screws 14, 15, for attaching the workpiece W to the top surface. The jig is made in two parts 10, 11 which are located in the longitudinal direction by dowels 9 and connected together by end plates 12, 13, the end plates being secured by screws 22 fitted selectively in tapped holes 20 in order to vary the space 8 between the two parts and, if desired, the longitudinal taper. Blocks 16, 17 can be secured to the top surface of the jig, in different positions according to the length of the stave, by screws selectively fitted in tapped holes 18, 19. In use, the end 10<SP>3</SP> of the jig, which is of rectangular shape, is supported on the lower back table of a surface planing machine and the stave and jig are passed over the cutter on to the front table until one projecting side of the stave is trimmed down to the inclined side of the jig, whereupon the jig is reversed and the other side is similarly trimmed. The forward movement of the jig is limited by a stop fixed on the front table. According to the Provisional Specification, the jig may be a solid block made of wood or plastic or may comprise four wedge-shaped wooden strips, the outer strips being hinged at their wider surface edge to the intermediate strips and the intermediate strips being adjustably connected together by right- and left-handed screw members received in tapped holes in lugs at each end of the strips. A slidable. stop may be fitted between the intermediate strips and, for adjustment of the angle of bevel, screws may be fitted to extend through the thickness of the outer strips and bear on the intermediate strips.
