A press tool comprises a die section 10 incorporating a base block 101 having the die outline formed therein as a cut-out 103, a lining 13 of cutting steel being secured to the surface bounding the cut-out by means of screws 14, and a punch section 12 which incorporates the block 121 resulting from the cutting of the die outline, a surround 15 of cutting steel being secured to the punch block 121 by means of screws 17. The lining 13 and surround 15 may each be made in one or more pieces. The die and punch sections are secured to backing plates 18, 20, Fig. 5, which are secured to the bed 211 and ram 212 of a press. The backing plates are provided with aligning pegs 181 and sockets 202. Cut-out blanks are ejected by means of a plate 23 supported by rubber blocks 24, and material is stripped from the punch section 12 by means of rubber strippers 25. The ejector plate 23 may be dispensed with and the backing plate 18 gapped below the cut-out 103 in the die block 101. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the lining is secured to the die block by means of tapped holes in ferrules secured to the lining being engaged by the shanks of bolts passed through the die block. In another modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), shims are interposed between the die block and its lining and between the punch block and its surround to correct distortion of the lining or surround. In a further modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), the press tool is constructed for simultaneous blanking and piercing. In a still further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the lining and surround are secured to the die and punch blocks respectively by means of bolts passing through open-ended slots in the lining and surround.
