666,349. Two-stroke engines. TRIUMPH WERKE NURNBERG AKT.-GES. July 13, 1949 [Jan. 29, 1949], No. 18467/49. Class 7(ii) In a two-stroke internal-combustion engine having two cylinders 10, 11 divided by a partition wall 14 and covered by a common cylinder head 13 in which two pistons 8, 9 acted upon by a common impulse and working in the same direction in phase with each other, are so driven from a common crankshaft 2 that the plane passing through the axes of the two pistons passes also through the crankshaft axis, the pistons being mounted on a common forkshaped connecting rod 5, and the bolt holes 19 of the piston bolts being disposed above the lower edges 20 of the pistons so that over the whole stroke the pistons are guided in the cylinders 10, 11, the wall 14 is provided with slots 15, 16 enabling the forked-shaped end of rod 5 to extend, in the inner dead-centre position of the pistons 8, 9, as far as possible into the cylinders, the slots being positioned so that in the inner dead-centre position they are not uncovered by the upper piston edges. The cylinders are arranged so that their common axis is at right angles to direction of motion of. a vehicle driven by the engine and hence to the flow of cooling air. One of the pistons controls the inlet passage and the other the exhaust port.
