Abstract
666,001. Liquid seals. ERDOS, A. Nov. 10, 1948, No. 29234/48. Class 122(v). [Also in Group XXIX] A stuffing - box substitute for a screw-down valve comprises a closed chamber e filled with a viscous sealing material, e.g. grease or liquid, and having at one end, the top end as shown, threads for cooperation with the spindle and at the other end a ring g, e.g. of felt or non- ferrous metal, for wiping the spindle as it emerges from the chamber. In a modification, the wiping ring, of non-ferrous metal, screws into the lower end of the chamber and has internal threads coacting with the spindle, whilst in another arrangement the spindle coacts with a nut fixed to a handwheel and rotatable but not axially movable in the upper end of the chamber. A further modification is similar to the construction shown but the threaded part of the chamber is at the bottom thereof and the wiping ring at the top.
