Abstract

In the operation of a zinc blast furnace of the kind which is hermetically sealed at the top, air being introduced both at the top and at the bottom of the furnace with an outlet for the furnace arranged in between, the air introduced at the top of the furnace is introduced into a space above the charge in such quantity as is insufficient to cause substantial slagging of the charge in the upper part of the furnace. Thus not more than 60 per cent of the air used may be introduced at the top of the furnace, the remainder being introduced at the bottom. Part of the charge may be in the form of oxidized zinciferous material briquetted with carbonaceous material. A reactive coke or other highly reactive carbonaceous material may be included in the charge.
