In a machine in which a wrapper is folded about a sweet or like article and at least one end closure is formed by twisting an extending end portion of the wrapper to form a fantail, e.g. as described in Specification 352,946, the twisting device comprises a rotatable member to which are pivoted a pair of opposed members 18, 19 carrying notched blade members 21 and formed with flat surfaces 22, the arrangement being such that on inward movement of the members a narrow portion of the wrapper is first compressed into the notches to form a twisted neck and the extending portion of the wrapper is then gripped by the surfaces 22 to complete the formation of the fantail while the neck is engaged by the notched members. As shown, the members 18, 19 are pivoted at 17 to a forked extension 16 of a sleeve 11 rotatably and slidably mounted in bearings 12, 13 and are formed with gear segments 23 meshing with racks 24 formed on a rod 27 which is slidable in the sleeve against the action of a spring 31. The sleeve is rotatable through gearing by a shaft 44 and is reciprocated by a cam 53 on the shaft which engages a roller 52 on a pivoted forked arm 49 which carries a pair of rollers 48 engaged between the flanges of a collar 47 secured to the sleeve. An extension 54 of the arm is linked to an extension 56 of a forked arm 57 secured to a shaft 58 and carrying rollers 59 engaging the flanges of roller 61 slidable on the shaft 44 but rotatable therewith. A striking arm 62, pivoted on the shaft 58 and carrying a roller 63 engaging a cam 64 formed on the collar 61, operates a tappet 28 on the rod 27. The timing of the cams is such that the members 18, 19 are moved towards the sweet in the open position and then closed to perform the twisting operation. The arm 49 is acted on by a return spring 66.
