Abstract

Textile materials are bleached by first immersing them in a solution or suspension of an activator which increases the rate of bleaching by a chlorite bath, and then transferring them to a neutral or alkaline chlorite bleaching bath, so that the impregnated material brings the necessary activating agent into the bleaching bath. Suitable activators are solutions, emulsions or suspensions of compounds of elements of Group V or VI of the Mendelieff classification as described in Specification 639,235, or hydrolysable organic solvents as described in Specification 651,405. In examples: (1) and (2) unbleached flax yarn is immersed in a solution of sodium thiosulphate, drained and then immersed in a solution of sodium chlorite; (3) unbleached flax yarn is immersed in a solution of sulphur in tetrachlorethane, centrifuged and immersed in a solution of sodium chlorite; (4) and (5) unbleached cotton cloth is immersed in tetrachlorethane, centrifuged and immersed in a solution of sodium chlorite.
