664,719. Knitting-machines. STIBBE & CO., Ltd., G., STIBBE, E. V., PALMER, G., and CARVER, S. E. May 26, 1950 [June 16, 1949], No. 16079/49. Class 74 (ii). The clutch mechanism of a circular machine is provided with a depressable member 30 adjacent a recess 6, defined by the edge 30b of the member 30 and the end 6b of a slot cut in the hub 7 of a continuously rotating pinion 8, which recess receives a dog 4 of a sleeve 20 slidably keyed to a shaft 2 for transmitting the drive from the pinion 8 to the shaft 2. A similar depressable member 36 is mounted in the sleeve 20 at the end opposite the dog 4 and defines with the end 5b of a slot in the sleeve a recess 5 for engagement by a dog 9 of a second pinion 11, which is rotatably reciprocated by the quadrant gear. Actuation of the sleeve 20 in either direction initially depresses one of the members 30, 36 against spring action thereby enabling a gradual and smooth interengagement of the dogs and recesses to take place. The disposition of the dogs and the recesses may be varied as desired, for example, both dogs may be provided on the sleeve and the recesses in the hubs of the pinions.
