Class 80 (iv) A die press for embossing sheets of paper or card has a guard comprising a shroud 14 which is pivotally supported above the layboard 2 with sufficient clearance for insertion of the sheets. The shroud may be of transparent material or in the form of a mesh, and co-operates with fixed side pieces 15; it is carried by arms 16 secured to a horizontal shaft 18 on which is a cam 26 coacting with a spring-loaded vertically-slidable rod 24. When the machine control lever 10 is in the " stop " position, in which a clutch 9 (Fig. 2) is disengaged and a brake 11 applied, a horizontally-guided stop plate 30, which is linked to the lever 10, is in such a position that a hole 36 therein registers with the upper end of the rod 24. Upon lifting of the shroud, by means of a handle 20, the rod 24 enters the hole 36 and prevents movement of the lever 10 to the running position until the shroud is closed. When the lever is moved to the running position, the plate 30 is moved to constitute a stop preventing upward movement of the rod 24 and thereby locking the shroud in its closed position. The layboard 2 is positioned on the press frame by pegs one of which, 50, may co-operate with a switch 51 to stop the press if the layboard is removed, and a further switch (not shown) may be operated by movement of the shroud. These switches may be directly in the circuit of a motor driving the press or may control electromagnetically a clutch or brake.
