708,603. Feeding webs. TODD, C. July 4, 1952 [Aug. 22, 1951], No. 16907/52. Class 100 (1). [Also in Groups VIII and XXII] A punch press or other machine is provided with electromagnetic means for stopping the machine if the stock is improperly fed. A pedal rod 8 actuates a one revolution clutch. The stock is fed under rolls 29, 30, 31, for feeling the end of the stock, detecting buckling and detecting short stock respectively, which operate switches in series with an electromagnet 44. When the machine is started by lowering the rod 8 and the stock closes the switches the armature 42 is projected against spring pressure to hold a stop 23 on the rod 8 down. When, due to improper feeding, one of the switches is opened the armature is withdrawn and the rod 8 rises to stop the machine. In this position another stop 49 closes a switch 46 to re-energize the electromagnet 44 to lock the rod 8 in the raised position. To restart the machine a switch 50 is opened to de-energize the electromagnet and the clutch pedal is depressed. A guard 51 may operate a switch 52.
