Coining.-A coining press is characterized by the incorporation of a feeler arm under which the formed coin is fed during the feeding of the next blank to the dies, said feeler arm being connected to trip mechanism which automatically stops the press if the feeler arm is not engaged by the formed coin. In an embodiment of the invention, the gripper arms of a coining press feeding mechanism as described in Specification 676,562, feed a formed coin by means of arcuately recessed end faces 7a to a position in advance of the dies adjacent a shoot 8 down which the formed coins are discharged. A feeler arm 9 bears on the table 10 of the press adjacent the dies in the position to which the formed coin is fed by the gripper arms 7 after extraction from the dies. The feeler arm is mounted in one end of a lever 11 rockable about an axis 12 the other end of the lever bearing on a trip rod 13 which passes through a slot in a vertically spring-loaded plunger 15. The rod 13 is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 16 the other arm being connected to the clutch-disengaging rod 18 of the press. When the feeler arm 9 contacts the table 10 the rocker lever 11 allows the spring- loaded plunger 15 to raise the rod 13 into the path of a cam-operated bell-crank lever 19 which is operated once during each cycle of the press, and the consequent movement of the rod 13 disengages the clutch. When a coin is disposed beneath the feeler arm the rod 13 is depressed and removed from the path of the lever 19. In another embodiment the feeler arm 9 is mounted on a spindle 21 rotatable in bearings 22 and carrying at one end an arm 23 which bears under a projection 24 on a trip rod 25. The end of the trip rod adjacent its pin- and-slot connection to the frame of the press bears against one arm of a spring-loaded bellcrank lever 28, the other arm of which bears against a clutch-operating rod 29 of the press. The free end of the tip-rod has a T-shaped head 30 engaging either one of a pair of camoperated spring-loaded bell-crank levers 31 and 32 pivoted on a common axis 35 and operated once during each cycle of the press. The lever 31 is provided with a foot 36 which extends below the lever 32. In operation, when a formed coin is below the feeler arm the trip-rod is raised so that the foot of lever 31 passes beneath the rod and the rod is not moved longitudinally to operate the clutch. The bell-crank lever 32 is operated during the cycle of operation when no coin should be beneath the feeler arm so that if the formed coin has not been discharged to the shoot 8 the lever 32 will engage the raised trip rod and disengage the clutch. If there is no coin beneath the feeler arm then the trip rod will be in its lowered position and the lever 32 will pass over it.
