Abstract
663,840. Illumination systems. GRETENER, E. Dec. 22,1947 [Dec. 18, 1946], No. 33765/47. Class 97 (i). An optical illumination system comprises a light source, a lenticular screen to split up the beam from said source into a great number of elementary beams and forming as many images of said source, a device positioned at or near each image point for controlling the colour or intensity of each elementary beam; or two devices positioned at or near each image point, one for controlling the colour and the other for controlling the intensity of each elementary beam, means for operating each device independently of the others and means for simultaneously operating the colour and/or intensity controlling devices; or a device positioned at or near each image point and common to all the elementary beams for simultaneous control of the colour or intensity of all such beams; or two devices positioned at or near each image point and common to all the elementary beams, one for simultaneous control of the intensity and the other for simultaneous control of the colour of all elementary beams, so that the elementary beams may be separately or simultaneously, or only simultaneously, adjustable in respect of light intensity or colour. A sound lenticular screen may be provided and forms an image of each image of the light source produced by the first lenticular screen, and a colour or intensity controlling device may be positioned at or near each of the first and sound image points. As shown in Fig. 2, a light beam is directed by a concave mirror (not shown), from a source, e.g. an arc lamp on to a lenticular screen 3, each element 7 of which forms at 4 an image of the source. At or near each image point 4 is disposed a colour or intensity controlling device 6. Each colour controlling device may comprise a filter, Fig. 4, the colour shade of which varies in one direction and the colour saturation of which varies in the orthogonal direction so that by moving the filter in orthogonal directions the hue F and saturation S of the beam in which the filter is situated may be varied. Each device 6 may consist of two plates I, II, Fig. 5, having similar apertures and movable in orthogonal directions to vary the cross-section of the transmitted beam. 'The number of apertures in each plate I and II may be equal to the number of elementary light beams so that simultaneous control of the intensity of said beams may be effected. Similarly, a plate having the same number of colour filters of the kind shown in Fig. 4 may be inserted in the light path to allow of simultaneous control of the colour of the elementary beams.
