Abstract
646,642. Theatre lighting. WILLIAMS, R. G. Dec. 12, 1946, No. 36761. [Class 132 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A colour lighting apparatus comprises the combination of means so arranged as to split each of several major beams of different colours into a plurality of component beams, means so arranged as to transpose at least some of the component beams so as to mingle the colours, and means so arranged as to combine the component beams into a unitary beam in their transposed relationship. Four light sources giving light of four different colours as by coloured screens &c. are arranged each at a corner of a rectangle RGBW, Fig. 4, the points B, W (not shown) being vertically below the points R, G, respectively. The light from each source is reflected by a parabolic reflector, e.g. 3 or 4 and projected forwardly as parallel beams e.g. 1R and 1G, which pass through nests of black masking rings 5 and 6 which substantially prevent the passage of light direct from the sources. The beams 1R, 1G are divided by reflectors 7, 8 which deflect component beams R2, G<SP>1</SP> and allow beams R<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP> to pass straight ahead. After crossing the beams R2, G<SP>1</SP> are again deflected by reflectors 9, 10 to emerge parallel with the beams R<SP>1</SP> and G<SP>2</SP>. In an alternative construction the black rings 5 may be replaced by lenses formed with circular prisms. Alternatively, no reflectors may be employed, the direct light from the sources R, G &c. being passed through a prismatic lens system to produce the parallel beams R<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP> &c. and the crossing beams R<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>1</SP> &c., and a further prismatic lens system is employed to render all the emergent beams parallel. As shown in Fig. 6 the major beam directed rearwardly from each source R, G may be split into component beams and the required transposition effected by reflectors 13, 14, H, 16 the reversed beams R<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>1</SP> being masked by plates 19, 20 and directed to refracting prisms 17, 18 to emerge parallel with the beams R<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP> also masked by the plates 19, 20. In a further modification the four major beams are produced by a single light source by four reflectors and a multi colour screen may be interposed between the sources and the reflector so that each reflector receives light of a particular colour. Specification 640,693 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
