Abstract

524,579. Optical - projection apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and LUCAS, G. S. C. Feb., 1, 1939, No. 3398. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XL] The degree of illumination of an area extending beyond an illuminated surround for a projected kinematograph or television image, or of the auditorium, or both, is controlled by one or more photo-electric cells in accordance with the average intensity of the projected image. The surround may be illuminated, and its intensity controlled, by means described in Specification 514,673. The photo-electric cells may have light reflected from the image area of the screen imaged upon them, may have a portion of the light passing to the surround deflected on to them, may be placed in the path of light to the surround, or may have an image projected on to them from a film frame near to that being projected. The cells may be rendered selectively colour sensitive, and may each control lamps of an appropriate colour. The cell currents may be amplified and control the lighting currents by means of an electrostatically controlled arc rectifier and a saturable reactor.
