Abstract

663,484. Coke ovens. ALLIED CHEMICAL & DYE CORPORATION. June 7, 1949 [Aug. 4,1948], No. 15077/49. Class 51 (ii). A rich gas-fired underjet coke oven battery has, spaced along the battery supporting mat 10, massive walls 16 defining coking chambers 25 and regenerators 26, each wall 16 including in its upper portion heat-transmitting walls 18 on opposite sides thereof, and two rows 19 and 20 of vertical heating flues enclosing a massive refractory wall 22 which with liners 23 is at least four times the width of the heat transmitting walls. On the pusher side of the battery each row of heating flues has an outer group of flues 40-47 communicating by a horizontal top flue 48 with an inner group of flues 49-56 and on the coke side of the battery an outer group of flues 57-62 communicating by a horizontal top flue 63 with an inner group of flues 64-70. Disposed below each oven chamber 25 is a row of regenerators 26 comprising outer regenerators 27 connected by a sole flue 29 to the respective outer groups of heating flues and an inner regenerator 28 connected by a sole flue 30 to the inner groups of beating flues. If desired, a pair of inner regenerators 28 may be used, each connected to an individual group of inner heating flues or the regenerators may be divided along the median plane so that each row of heating flues is connected to a separate row of regenerators. The heating flues are provided with alternate high and low burner nozzles 74 and 73 supplied with coke oven gas from pairs of mains 76 in the basement 14, each burner supply pipe having an individual flow regulator of the type disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,199,961. Alternate mains 76 supply the inner and outer groups of heating flues and are themselves supplied alternately through three-way valves 80 with coke oven gas from the main 78 or de-carburizing air from the main 83. Clean air of predetermined humidity may be admitted into the basement 14 through the channel 87 and reversing valves 31 at the coke side of the battery supply air to the sole channels 29 and 30 or exhaust waste gases into the flue 32. The robust construction of the dividing walls 16 enables coal with as low a volatiles content, as 18 per cent to be successfully coked. U.S.A. Specifications 2,155;954 and 2,407,356 are also referred to.
