Abstract
663,147. Variable-pitch propellers. NICHOLS, H. J. Oct. 11, 1949 [Nov. 26. 1948], No. 26029/49. Class 114. The blades 3 have two pins 6 on their bases engaging cam slots in a piston 8 moved by hydraulic fluid reaching it through the hollow shaft 2 and the internal duct 10. This fluid is passed through the rotating shaft from the surrounding stationary muff 13 (Fig. V) containing apertured rotary rings 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, with packing glands on each side. The fluid is supplied from the pump P, Fig. VIII, through the hand controlled valve VP to one end of the cylinder SM, the other end of the cylinder exhausting through the waste unit MU which in turn moves the valve casing SV. The piston 8 has passages D through it with valves CV at each end, which when the piston reaches the end of its stroke contact the cylinder end and so allow the piston and the haud lever OM to be synchronised. In a modification the movement of the control handle pumps the fluid to the cylinder.
