Abstract
662,791. Cutting tobacco. LEGG, Ltd., R., and SCHREIBER, P. Q. R. March 24, 1950 [March 24, 1949], No. 8110/49. Class 5(i) In cutting leaf tobacco by knives 10 on a rotary drum 12, as the tobacco is pushed through a mouthpiece 8 by converging conveyers 4, 6 the lower area of the drum is encased in a hood 32 which is kept under partial vacuum to suck any cut tobacco out of the channel pockets 16 adjacent the knives in the drum, air being admitted from the interior of the cutter to sweep radially through the pockets 16 as they pass through the hood area. The corresponding area of the drum interior is covered by a stationary shield or duct 39 connected to a hollow stub axle 42 whereby outside air is sucked into the interior. Some outside air is admitted through the clearance 37 to prevent tobacco being carried outside the hood. A conveyer 44 in the bottom of the hood 32 delivers the tobacco on to an outside delivery conveyer 46 which also receives lighter tobacco from a settling chamber 36 leading to the suction fan. The cutters 16 may be arranged helically around the drum. Specification 660,790 is referred to.
