Abstract

662,307. Clutch-brake combinations. CLEVELAND PUNCH & SHEAR WORKS COAug. 11, 1949 [Sept. 1, 1948], No. 20932/49- Class 80 (ii) [Also in Group XXXIV] A clutch-brake combination, arranged between a belt-driven flywheel 6 and the crankshaft 2 of a press, &c., comprises clutch-shoes 11 and brake-shoes 12, centrally pivoted on oppositely directed eccentric portions 29, 30 of a levermember, rotatable on a pin 22 adjustably carried by forked arms of a boss 10 keyed to the driven shaft 2, said eccentric-lever member 29, 30 having opposed unequal lever-arms 27, 28, the former, 27, linked to pistons 36 sliding in cylinders formed in the driven boss 10, and the latter, 28, connected to the boss 10 by pre-compressed springs 35, which, in the absence of fluid-pressure on the pistons, turn the eccentric-lever member 27, 30 to expand the brake-shoes 12 into engagement with a fixed drum 18 and simultaneously retract the clutch-shoes 11, whilst application of fluid-pressure to the pistons 36, through a central shaft-passage 39, overcomes the springs, turning the eccentrics in the opposite direction to retract the brake-shoes 12 and expand the clutch-shoes 11 into engagement with a clutchdrum 7 bolted to the driving flywheel. The ends of the bearing-pin 22 of the eccentrics are eccentric to the central eccentric-lever supporting portion to provide shoeadjustment by turning the pins in their housing, locking being effected by a screw 56 passed through a pinned arm on the pin 22 and entered into one of a series of holes 58 tapped in the forked arms of the boss 10. Spring-detents 52 engage radial guide-slots in the heads of pins 50 carried by the shoes 11, 12 to centralise the shoes and prevent tilting when disengaged. To facilitate dismantling the clutch-drum 7 is larger than the brake-drum 18. Specifications 653,579 and 653,661 are referred to.
