649,306. Combined clutches and brakes. CLEVELAND PUNCH & SHEAR WORKS CO. July 22, 1948, No. 19645. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1947. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Combined clutching and braking members 8 are pivoted on a rotary base member 7 and have opposed end portions 37 operatively engaged by fluid and spring-actuating means on the member 7 to effect selective shifting of the members 8 into clutching or braking engagement. As shown, applied to connect the countershaft 2 of a power press or like machine selectively to a driving flywheel 5 or a stationary brake drum 12, the members 8 have clutch and brake shoes 10, 11 co-acting respectively therewith. Two members 8 are provided, pivoted on adjacent pins 19 and having free ends 37 acted on by a two-stage fluid operating mechanism to expand the members 8 for clutching engagement. A piston 27, 28 slidable in a cylinder in the member 7 has a larger end 27 acted upon by air or other fluid supplied under pressure via passages 31, 30 to force the smaller end 28 into a liquid-filled chamber 33 and displace pistons 35 co-acting with the ends 37 of the members 8. Upon release of the air pressure, the members 8 are retracted into braking engagement by spring units comprising precompressed springs 41 acting on the ends 37 through levers 49. The springs 41 react against abutments 38 on the member 7, guide rods 45 being provided.
