Abstract

The work piece (G) is gripped by four radially arranged pistons (D) sliding in cylinders fed with oil through an inlet (E). The oil is fed into the clamp by the action of the screw (C) on the spring (R) which pushes on the piston (P). The more the spring (R) is compressed, the higher the clamping force exerted by the pistons (D). The clamping pressure may be exerted through a rotating cam instead of the screw (C). The idea can be applied to hydraulic brakes, to an Oldham type coupling, and to a cardan shaft drive. It can also be adapted to a centrifugal clutch in which the clamping pressure is exerted by the centrifugal force of rotating weights.
