Abstract
1370615 Jointing by forging; swaging; stamping; crimping BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Oct 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 57496/70 Headings B3H and B3Q Apparatus for crimping or swaging a tube on to a component located within the tube comprises a ring of spaced, radially-extending dies 10, a support 12, 15 at one axial end of the ring, means (22), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) to mount the dies independently on the support for radial sliding movement with respect to the axis 11 of the ring, a member (not shown) having a bore in which the ring is engageable, the bore of the member and outer surfaces of the dies both being shaped so that relative movement of the member and ring displaces the dies radially inwardly, and means for effecting movement of the member and ring, the dies being generally wedge-shaped when viewed along the ring axis so that the outer surfaces of the dies are wider than the inner surfaces nearest the axis. The ring of dies is mounted in two halves on plates 12, 15, the plate 12 being secured to a vertical platen 14 of a press and plate 15 slidably mounted on platen 14 within guides 16, thus allowing separation of the ring halves to enable the tube to be inserted into the dies. Cylinder 19 and piston-rod 21 are utilized for moving plate 15. Each die 10 is mounted by means of a slide (22) to its respective plate and comprises a die shoe 28 and die finger 29. The outer surface of each shoe is part-conical so that they will be accommodated by a collar which is slidably mounted on rods 30 fixed to platen 14 which causes the fingers to move inwardly and swage or crimp the tube. The dies are resiliently urged apart when not acted upon by the collar so as to move outwardly. The ring halves are connected together at both ends by springs (34), Fig. 3 (not shown), co-operating with sleeves (33) which limit the separation of adjacent dies, which dies have compression springs (50) in their opposite facing bores (32). The fingers 29 are detachable and are maintained within the shoes by way of studs (40), (43). The die fingers may be of different form, Fig. 4 (not shown), for crimping or swaging different size tubes. The cylinder and piston assembly is pneumatically controlled and the collar is driven by a double acting hydraulic ram. Modifications of the apparatus include varying the join between plates 12, 15 and the movement of plate 15 to one side instead of vertically by using a pivoted arm.
