Abstract

[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVIII] The speed of an electric motor 4 is measured by comparing the voltage across the armature 2 of a tachometer generator with the voltage drop across a resistor 6 connected in series with the field 5 of the tachometer across D.C. bus-bars 8, 10. The resistor 6 has a negligible temperature coefficient and is adjusted so that at a desired speed there is zero voltage across the indicating voltmeter 18. As applied to automatic speed control, the voltage at 18 amplified electronically or otherwise, is used to control a regulator 19 in the field circuit of the motor 4, or the throttle of a prime mover may be controlled.
