Abstract
754,846. Control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 22, 1955 [March 15, 1954], No. 7470/54. Class 38(3) [Also in Group XL(c)] In following a target on radar equipment the position of a strobe is controlled by a handwheel 1 which is coupled to a tachometer generator 2 having a resistor 3 in its output circuit. The voltage developed across this resistor is used to control the speed of a motor connected to the moving member of a potentiometer, the position of which determines the position of the. strobe. The resistor 3 has connected in series with it a variable resistor 4 which is adjusted by means of pedal 6. When the target has a low rate of change of range all the variable resistance is in circuit, and, as the rate of change increases, the amount of resistance is reduced so that a higher signal voltage is developed for the same speed of rotation of the handwheel. In this manner the rate at which the handwheel is operated may be maintained within comparatively close limits regardless of the rate of change of range. The application to other forms of navigational or direction-finding equipment, for example optical apparatus, is referred to in which the variable resistor may be replaced by a speed-change ratio device in a mechanical drive.
