661,598. Bowden mechanism; locking rods. S. U. CARBURETTER CO., Ltd. April 20, 1950 [April 21, 1949], No. 10567/49. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Group XXXI] A Bowden cable 7, which may operate a carburetter control, is actuated manually by axial movement of the knob 13 of a hollow plunger 12, and frictional locking means are provided for retaining the cable in any position of adjustment. A hollow rubber plug 8 having an interference fit in a fixed cylindrical casing 1 is held in a pair of members 9, 10, and the member 10 is screwed to a sleeve 11 surrounding the plunger 12. The cable 7 passes through the member 9 and the plunger 12 and is attached to a pin 16 which passes through a slot 17 in the plunger and is secured to the sleeve 11. The tension in the cable 7 normally acts upon the sleeve 11 to compress the rubber 8 and jam it in the casing 1, thus axially locking the cable. If, however, the plunger 12 is pulled so that a shoulder 18 thereon abuts the sleeve 11, or is pushed to abut the member 9, the plug 8 is subjected to tensile stress causing its waist to contract and permit the desired adjusting movement.
