728,081. Actuating Bowden mechanism. MELSON, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Sept. 11, 1953 [Sept. 12, 1952], No. 23001/52. Class 136(1). Bowden mechanism comprising inner and outer members A, B, has means, such as a ball 13 and plunger 10, which releasably co-operate with the inner member A and an outer helix 1 in such manner that adjustment of the mechanism may be achieved by either direct relative axial displacement between the inner member A and outer member B or by relative axial displacement in response to fine screw action. The helix shown is in the form of a coil extending between a fixed bush 2 and an adapter 3, and the ball is pressed into the internal helical groove of the coil by an inclined surface of the plunger 10, the latter being urged upwardly by a spring 16. The coil surrounds a rotatable tube 7 whose lower end receives a ball 5 at the end of member A and whose other end carries an actuating knob 8. For coarse adjustment the plunger 10 is pushed downwardly by a push button 15 to release the ball from the coil, whereupon the knob may be pulled away from the bush. The plunger may then be released, and subsequent fine adjustment by the action of the ball in the helical groove when the knob is rotated. Specification 442,138, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
