A stick of transferable material such as a crayon 14 is slidably encased in an outer sheath 13 of cardboard or the like, and at the end remote from the writing end has a stop means comprising a metal strip, as shown in Fig. 1, partly set into the material. The stop means has first lateral projections 11 intermediate of its length which bear against the internal wall of the sheath 13, and second lateral projections 12 arranged to contact the inner wall of the sheath and prevent the material 14 from sliding backwards in the sheath by digging into the material of the sheath when pressure is applied to the writing and. In producing the crayon, the stop member is first placed into the top end of the sheath opposite to the writing end so that the second lateral projections 12 lie horizontally across the top end. In this position the stop member is held under compression by the first lateral projection 11 against the internal wall of the sheath. The molten transferable material 14 is poured into the sheath 13 and on setting retains the stop means except for the second lateral projections 12.
