Abstract
660,824. Glass manufacture. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd. Dec. 13, 1948 [Dec. 22, 1947], No. 32217/48. Class 56 Toughened glass is bent and de-toughened along a selected line by heating it along the line by high-frequency di-electric oscillations, thus producing a zone which permits bending in hinge-like manner. In Fig. 4, the glass plate 1 is supported on an inverted V-member 30, being positioned by a stop 33. Electrodes 36, 41 are arranged transversely below and above the glass, the electrode 41 being carried by but insulated from a frame 39 pivoted at 40 to the member 30. The electrode 36 is housed in a silica tube 34 which is joined to a vertical tube 35 enclosing the conductor 38. The member 30 is wheeled into, and through a furnace, and current is provided by conductor rails 46, 47 and brushes 37, 42. The rails are of such length that the glass is sufficiently softened, when the brushes leave the rails, to allow the glass to bend under its own weight. In a modification, the glass is conveyed through the furnace in a vertical hanging position. The electrodes are horizontal, and, when softening is complete, the electrodes are displaced laterally relatively to the glass, so that the part of the glass below the electrodes, in maintaining its vertical position, hinges about the softened zone. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, the glass, immediately after toughening, is heated by high-frequency oscillations in predetermined areas, the subsequent cooling of the glass being so regulated that the heated areas are detoughened. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
