Abstract
673,981. Drawing glass sheet. HENRY, G., BRICHARD, E., and UNION DES VERRERIES, MECANIQUES BELGES, SOC. ANON. July 25, 1949. No. 19511/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 19, 1950.] Class 56. A process for the vertical drawing of sheet glass from a bath of molten glass comprises drawing the glass through a refractory frame 1 confining a mass of molten glass wider than the bulb 9 formed at the foot of the sheet 8, cooling the bulb 9 and the glass immediately adjacent thereto by allowing them to radiate freely upwardly, and creating a local increase in temperature at the surface of the glass in the frame 1 extending horizontally on each side of the cool bulb 9. The zone of local heating is substantially equal in length to the bulb 9. The heating effect may be obtained by electric resistances 15 or gas burners, or it may rely simply on protrusions 13 to retard radiation from the molten glass surface. The parts 13 may be integral or separate from the frame 1, and may be associated with or replaced by screens 21, Fig. 7, the position of which can be varied manually. The screens 21 may have an inwardly curved edge adjacent the bulb 9 and each screen may comprise a plurality of members arranged side-by-side. The position of members 6 which cool the rising glass sheet 8 may also be varied, and may support the screens 21 which may be arched in a vertical plane.
