Abstract

Esters of hydroxylated hormones of the cyclopentanophenanthrene and stilboestrol series are prepared by reacting the hormone in the presence of a base with an acyloxyalkanoyl halide of general formula R-CO-O-X-CO-Y, where R is an alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms, X is an alkylene group having one to three carbon atoms and Y is halogen. Hormones mentioned include testosterone, oestradiol, oestrone, stilbestrol and desoxycorticosterone. Esters mentioned include the acetoxyacetate, propionoxyacetate, n-butoxyacetate, n-valeroxyacetate, beta-(isopropoxy) - propionate, alpha - propionoxybutyrate and beta-(n-butyroxy)-butyrate. The preferred basic agent is pyridine. Examples are given of the preparation of the following compounds: testosterone acetoxyacetate, testosterone beta - acetoxy - alpha - methylpropionate, and testosterone propionoxyacetate.
