Abstract
The invention comprises 16a ,17a -(1-lower alkoxy)-alkylidenedioxy steroids, wherein said lower alkoxy group contains 1-6 carbon atoms, and the alkylidenedioxy group contains 1-7 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 16a ,17a -dihydroxy steroid with an ortho ester of the formula R2C(OR1)3, in which R1 is a lower alkyl and R2 is H or a lower alkyl radical, wherein the lower alkyl and lower alkoxy groups contain 1-6 carbon atoms. Preferred products of the invention have the formula <FORM:0895400/IV (b)/1> wherein R is H or a lower alkanoyl radical, R3 is -H(OH) or =O, R4 is H, halogen or a methyl radical, R1 and R2 are as defined above, X is H or a halogen atom and -C1-C2 is a <FORM:0895400/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0895400/IV (b)/3> group. As ortho ester there may be used ethyl ortho-formate, methyl ortho-formate or ethyl ortho-acetate.
