Abstract
A dye powder comprises a water-insoluble dyestuff in the form of colloidally dispersible particles, agglutinated with an amount of dried secondary liquorice extract equal to at least one eighth the amount of the dyestuff, and is prepared by kneading the finely-divided dyestuff and liquorice extract with sufficient water to make a stiff paste. A water-soluble inorganic salt and an organic wetting agent, e.g. a sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde resin, may also be present. Heat may be applied during kneading. The secondary liquorice extract is obtained by digestion with hot aqueous caustic soda, hot aqueous alkali-metal bisulphites, or a hot aqueous mixture of caustic soda and sodium sulphide of liquorice root after the primary extract consisting of the water-soluble ingredients, has been removed. In examples, the following dyestuffs are kneaded with water and dried secondary liquorice extract, other ingredients being used as indicated: (1) chlorinated N - dihydro - 1,2,11,21 - anthraquinoneazine; (2) 5,51-dichlor-6,61-dimethylthioindigo; (3) tetrachlor-isoviolanthrone; (4) 1,4 - dihydroxy - 5,8 - di - (21 - hydroxyethylamino)-anthraquinone; (5) 1,4-di-(21-hydroxyethylamino) - anthraquinone; (6) a - cyano-b - (p - N - diethylamino phenyl) - acrylic acid ethylester (see U.S.A. Specification 1,950,421); (7) 1 - amino - 4 - hydroxyanthraquinone; (8) 1,4 - di - monomethylamino - anthraquinone; (9) 1,4 - diaminoanthraquinone; (10) 4 - methyl-2 - hydroxy - 41 - acetylamino - azobenzene; (11) 4 - (p - hydroxyphenylazo) - azobenzene; (12) 4 - nitro - 2 - chlor - 41 - (N - ethyl - N - b -hydroxyethylamino)-azobenzene; (13) 4-nitro-41-aminoazobenzene; (14) 3-(m-nitrophenylazo)-2,4 - diketo - N - methyl tetrahydroquinoline. Sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde resin was used with (8), sodium sulphate with (10), (11), (12), (13) and (14), and both with (7) and (9). Comparative tests using dispersing agents other than the liquorice extract are referred to. The products obtained according to 4-14 above are stated to be suitable for colouring cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose acetate.
