Abstract
Stable preparation of leuco vat dyes are prepared by mixing the leuco compound of a vat dye of the thioindigo or anthraquinone series, which is capable of dyeing cotton in a cold hydrosulphite vat, with a protective colloid, such as molasses, preferably with the addition of a wetting agent and a stabilizing agent, such as hydroquinone, and drying the mixture at any stage of the mixing process. The powders thus obtained may be mixed with a reducing agent and used directly for printing purposes, or they may be ground with caustic alkali or alkali starch and a reducing agent, such as hydrosulphite, and used for preparing a vat. In an example, 3 : 4 : 8 : 9-dibenzpyrene-5 : 10 - quinone (Specification 205,502, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is vatted, the leuco compound is precipitated by acidifying with sulphuric acid, and the paste obtained, neutralized by means of sodium carbonate, is mixed with molasses, a wetting agent, such as an alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acid, and hydroquinone, and dried in a vacuum.
