Sulphonic acids; dye preparations.-The distillation residues from benzaldehyde are sulphonated by treating them with an agent such as sulphuric acid, fuming sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid; the products are used for making dyestuff preparations in which the dyestuff is present in finely-divided form. The preparations may be used in the form of pastes, or they may be dried by evaporation, with or without the addition of another protective colloid, e.g. sulphite cellulose lye. Preparations of vat dyestuffs or of dyestuffs having affinity for cellulose esters are particularly useful. In examples, (1) the resinous by-product obtained in the rectification of benzaldehyde is sulphonated with fuming sulphuric acid and the product converted into the sodium salt, (2) the dyestuff from diazotized p-nitraniline and cresidine is pasted with a solution of the product made according to example 1, the resulting paste may be dried in a vacuum and powdered, either the paste or powder being suitable for preparing a dye-bath for acetate silk; pastes may be similarly produced from pyrazolone-azo dyes, anthraquinone derivatives or indophenols, (3) a flavanthrone paste is stirred with the sodium salt of the product obtained according to example 1, the paste becomes more fluid and passes into a vat, dyeing cotton in fast yellow tints, in presence of alkaline hydrosulphite solution; by drying the paste with sulphite cellulose lye, solid preparations are obtained which are particularly useful in cotton printing, and (4) a paste from 1:4:5: 8-tetra-aminoanthraquinone and the product made according to example 1 is stirred with soap solution and diluted with water to form a bath in which acetate silk is dyed a vivid blue; dye-baths may be similarly made from azo dyestuffs or indophenols. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the manufacture of sulphonation products from the distillation residues of turpentine and their use in making dyestuff preparations. According to one example, colophony is sulphonated by warming with sulphuric acid and the product converted into the sodium salt; similar products may be obtained from resin oil (the distillation products of colophony). In another example the product obtained from colophony is used for pasting the indophenol from diphenylamine and nitrosophenol; azo or anthraquinone dyes may be similarly treated. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
