Abstract

The tendency of dyestuff powders to form dust clouds is reduced by intimately mixing with the powder a liquid aliphatic alcohol of 7 or more carbon atoms per molecule in such an amount that the powder remains free flowing. Water insoluble dyes, e.g. those used for cellulose acetate rayon or nylon, or water-soluble dyes, e.g. haematin, may be treated. Mixtures of dyes may be treated and dispersing agents may be present. The use of 0.1 to 2 per cent of alcohol by weight is mentioned, generally 1 per cent is satisfactory. The alcohol may be mixed by tumbling with the powder or added in a volatile solvent, e.g. ether and carbon tetrachloride, or added to aqueous dyestuff pastes before or during drying. In examples: (1) 1 : 4-dimethylamino anthraquinone containing a sulphonated urea-cresolformaldehyde condensate (cf. Specification 510,515), is treated with oleyl alcohol in ether; (3) haematine crystals are mixed with lauryl alcohol; (5) Suldura Black (Colour Index No. 978) is mixed with octyl alcohol; (6) Benzanil Black E Extra (Colour Index No. 581) is mixed with oleyl alcohol, and (7) Dycamine Fast Red GL salt is mixed with lauryl alcohol. Specification 576,100 also is referred to.ALSO:The tendency of powders, e.g. silica powders, to form dust clouds is reduced by intimately mixing with the powder a liquid aliphatic alcohol of 7 or more carbon atoms per molecule in such an amount that the powder remains free flowing. The use of 0.1-2 per cent of alcohol by weight is mentioned, generally 1 per cent is satisfactory. The alcohol may be mixed by tumbling with the powder or added in a volatile solvent, e.g. ether or carbon tetrachloride. In an example, silica powder is mixed with oleyl alcohol.ALSO:The tendency of powders e.g. cements to form dust clouds is reduced by intimately mixing with the powder a liquid aliphatic alcohol of 7 or more carbon atoms per molecule in such an amount that the powder remains free flowing. The use of 0.1 to 2 per cent of alcohol by weight is mentioned, generally 1 per cent is satisfactory. The alcohol may be mixed by tumbling with the powder or added in a volatile solvent e.g. ether or carbon tetrachloride. Oleyl alcohol is specified. In an example 2 Portland cement is mixed with lauryl alcohol.
