Abstract

659,664. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. June 30, 1949, No. 17334. Convention date, July 2, 1948. [Classes 8(i) and 8(ii)] A suction cleaner of the handle-propelled type comprises a suction nozzle 11 carried by broad front and narrow rear wheels 12, 13, to provide automatic nozzle height adjustment for carpets of different thicknesses, a motor driven fan having its axis 16 transverse to the direction of motion of the cleaner and having at least the fan outlet passage 20, which leads to a dust bag 21, pivoted relative to the nozzle about the axis 16, a handle 31 pivoted to the nozzle casing 10 about an axis 36 below and/or to the rear of the axis 16, and a connection, e.g. a pin 37 and a slot 38 between the handle 31 and the passage 20 for causing and permitting the passage 20 and the handle 31 to pivot together about the axes 16, 31. The bag 21 is of paper and has a flange 24 by which it is held between a rubber gasket and a flange 27 of a perforated metal or plastic housing 22 by a latch 28. Dirt falls by gravity from the bag 21 into a detachable container 29 secured to the fan casing by a clamp 30. A valve (not shown) in the passage 20 prevents dirt falling into the fan. A dirt finder lamp is mounted on the nozzle. Specifications 412,894, 511,532 and 511,583 are referred to.
