corporation of Ohio ApplicationAugust 15, 1946, Serial No. 690,706
2 Claims. (01. 220-494) 1 The present invention relates to suction cleaners and more particularly to a carrying handle for a suction cleaner.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved suction cleaner. Another object is to provide an end cap for a suction cleaner casing, the end cap having a handle for carrying the cleaner. A further object is to provide a suction cleaner end cap having a handle recessed therein for carrying the cleaner. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a broken longitudinal section of the cleaner;
Figure 2 is a bottom plane view of the handle in the front end cap; and
Figure 3 is a section of a modified handle in the cleaner front end cap.
The embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a casing I closed at its exhaust end by a cap I I having an outlet port l2 adapted to receive the cleaner end of an unshown dusting tool hose provided at its opposite end with a surface-cleaning tool in a manner well known in the art. The end surface I3 of the cap extends normal to the longitudinal axis of the casing l0 so that the latter may be stored in a vertical upended position by placing the end cap II on a supporting surface.
The suction end of the casing I0 is closed by a removable end cap I4 provided with an inlet port I5 adapted to receive the cleaner end of a dusting tool unit in the same manner as port I 2. The end cap I4 is removably attached to the casing III by being provided at its lower end with a protruding lip l6 which seats within a pocket I1 formed at the end of a bracket l8 mounted on the fiat bottom wall I9 of the casing ID. A latch '20 is mounted on the top of the easing l0 and cooperates with the end cap M to force it against the end wall 2| of the casing I0, and a seal 22 prevents leakage of air therebetween.
Within the casing l0 adjacent the rear end cap H is a motor 23 for driving suction-creating fans disposed in a fan chamber 24. Between the fan chamber 24 and the front end cap I4 is a filter bag 25 having a closed end wall 28 and an open end which is secured to a circular flange 21, the latter defining the inlet to the bag 25. The casing II] is slidably supported in horizontal position for its surface-cleaning operation by a pair of skids 28 attached to the casing H].
A carrying handle 30 is provided in the front 2 end cap |4 and includes a recess 3| formed in the flat bottom portion 32 of the side wall '33 of the end cap I4, and the front wall 34 of the end cap 14 forms part of the recess 3|." The recessed handle 30 is spaced from the supporting surface by the skids 28 to permit the operator to insert his hand between the end cap l4 and the supporting surface to grasp the front end cap M to lift the cleaner and carry the latter from place to place.
When the cleaner is in its storage position the longitudinal axis of the casing is vertical and the rear end cap rests upon the supporting surface with the handle 30 spaced upwardly from the supporting surface at a convenient height for the operator to grasp the handle. In carrying the cleaner the operator places his fingers in the recess 3| and grasps the handle 30 in the front end cap I4, and in placing the cleaner on its skids 28 there is provided sumcient space between the end cap l4 and the supporting surface for the operator to remove his hand from the recess 3 I.
Figure 3 discloses a modified handle 40 in a front end cap 4| which is attached to the casing ID in the same manner as the end cap M. The handle 40 is recessed at 42 into the end cap 4| by an arcuate member 43 and the entrance 44 to the recess 42 is in the front wall 45 0f the end cap 4| and is spaced upwardly from the lower wall 46 of the end cap.
In use the operator places his fingers in the recess 42 and his thumb about the front wall 45 and bottom wall 46 whereby the cleaner can be carried from place to place. The position of the recess 42 with respect to the supporting skids 28 provides sufiicient space between the cleaner end cap 4| and the skid-supporting surface for the operator to insert his hand to grasp the handle.
I claim:
1. In a suction cleaner, a casing having an opening at one end, a cap removably attached to said casing one end for access to the interior of said casing through said opening, spaced supporting skids on said casing projecting outwardly beyond the bottom surface of said casing and the bottom surface of said cap for engagement with the floorcovering to space said bottom surfaces of said casing and cap above the floor covering, and a handle in said cap and comprising wall means defining a recess extending radially inwardly from the periphery of said cap and having its entrance disposed in said bottom surface of said cap between the limits defined by said spaced supportingskids, whereby the latter when resting on the floor covering at all times positions said entrance to said handle toward the floor covering for inserting the operator's hand into said handle.
2. In a suction cleaner, a casing having an opening at one end, a cap removably attached to said casing one end for access to the interior of said casing through said opening, spaced supporting skids on said casing projecting outwardly beyond the bottom surface of said casing and the bottom surface of said cap for engagement with the floor covering to space said bottom surfaces of said casing and said cap above the floor covering, and a handle in said cap and comprising wall means defining a recess extending radially inwardly from the periphery of said cap and adjacent to the exposed end wall of said cap for the reception of the operators fingers in said recess and thumb on said end Wall of said cap, said recess having its entrance disposed in the bottom surface of said cap between the limits defined by said spaced supporting skids,whereby the latter when resting on the floor covering at all times positions said entrance to said handle toward the wall.
