Abstract

659,574. Electrolytic production of iron. PRIMAVESI, D. Dec. 10, 1948, No. 32066. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1947. [Class 41] A process of obtaining readily pulverizable iron comprises the electrolysis of ferrous chloride in the presence of ammonium chloride and in the absence of organic acids, at a pH value of 3 to 6.5 and at an elevated temperature of less than 70‹ C. The electrodes may be insoluble graphite anodes and iron or aluminium cathodes. The anode chamber is separated from the cathode chamber by coarse diaphragms made, for example, from glass wool. Ferric chloride flowing from the anode chamber may be reduced by dissolving iron waste material, before being returned to the cathode chamber. The anode chamber may be partly filled with small iron scrap to prevent generation of free chlorine. Specification 503,306 is referred to.
