Abstract
543,137. Electro-deposition of iron. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 3, 1941, No. 1374. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1940. [Class 41] Iron is deposited from a high density electrolyte consisting of ferrous chloride and calcium chloride employing a secondary insoluble anode, for instance of graphite or carbon, to maintain a proportion of ferric ions in the solution, this being found to improve the deposit by preventing liberation of hydrogen at the cathode. An initial concentration of ferric ions is provided in the bath by the introduction of ferric chloride. The ferric ion concentration is maintained at between .015 and 1.5 grams per litre, which concentration is found to produce a voltage of between .174 and .330 volt as measured between gold and standard calomel electrodes at a temperature of 75‹ F. A suitable bath contains :- ferrous chloride 354 grams per litre calcium chloride 125 " " " ferric chloride 3.6 " " " The bath is worked at a temperature of between 170‹ F. and 195‹ F., using current densities of from 25 to 225 amperes per square foot of cathode area.
